My desk is a place of productivity. It is a constant hive of
activity, where I spend the majority of my 9-to-5 working-day assigning work
orders, answering e-mails and researching for our group-project on Cultural
Dimensions. Sitting somewhere on the boundary between rigid-structure and
organized-chaos, here I am often to be found buried under piles of documents
and numerous spreadsheets.
Before starting at Dwellworks, I had visions of the typical
desk-life as an endless round of mundane tasks, carried out by a sea of
dissatisfied, coffee-drinking employees. Three weeks into the internship and I
can tell you that life at Dwellworks UK is anything but that. In fact, I can
proudly state that not a single cup of coffee has been consumed since the
beginning of my time here; being British, of course, tea is another matter
entirely. The point is, on a day-to-day basis, I am so busy getting stuck in to
my job that my days are far from mundane.
Something that I learnt very early on in the programme is the
importance of maintaining a well-organized desk. This is crucial to the flow of
the working day and even something as simple as filing your e-mails correctly
can make doing your job one hundred times more successful. Post-it notes have
become my saviours and at the beginning of each day, I try to write myself a
to-do list which I will go through hour by hour to ensure that I get everything
done.
Unfortunately, the sheer chaos of my bedroom is a testament
to the fact that I am not a tidy person by nature. In the office, however, it
is crucial to make sure that you uphold an orderly working-system. All I know
is that if I am staring at a wall of clutter, my mind also becomes cluttered
and this makes it impossible to do my job correctly.
During the day, our offices have a beautiful view of the
River Fal and I enjoy spending my time here. Although work can sometimes get a
little stressful, I have tried to make my desk as calm as possible in order to
avoid unnecessary mistakes. It is definitely still in need of a desk plant, though.
