I experienced my first
town hall meeting yesterday. Being a management major, I am familiar with the
concept of one and what its purpose is, but I never really got the full picture
until I experienced one. A town hall meeting is a gathering of all the
employees from a single company location (e.g. branch or headquarters) that is
completely organized by the Company’s head executives. The general theme of a
town hall meeting is to refresh the employees on where the Company has been,
where they are, and where they are going; the overarching purpose of such a
meeting is to create the sensation of buy-in, personal investment, and job
satisfaction amongst the Company’s employees.
Now it is one way to
define a town hall meeting in all those ways but it is entirely different to be
part of one. Dwellwork’s CEO Bob Rosling and CFO Gene Novak centered their
presentation on their own company around business
and people. They summarized area of
the business they excelled in, areas where there was struggle, how they plan on
continuing to excel, fix the problem areas, and all while positively reinforcing
their business model and core values.
One of my favorite
parts was during the people portion of their presentation; they played video
displaying employees in each of the Company’s locations that shows the fun and
hard-working culture that has been developed over the years. After the
heartwarming commemorative video, Bob and Gene continued by honoring some of their
most valuable employees.
They both encouraged
questions from their employees on any aspect of the business and all questions
were answered, both honestly and earnestly, until everyone in the room was
satisfied. I felt as if I was sitting in on an investors meeting for a Fortune 500 company
from all the things they were saying, “You guys got us where we are today, and
we are confident that you all can get us where we want to go”. In that moment I
realized that here, at Dwellwork’s, the employees are the investors.
